What Is Disavow?

Disavowing is telling Google to ignore specific inbound links when assessing your site, by uploading a plain text file of URLs or domains to the disavow tool. The tool is not in the Search Console navigation and is reached by URL, which is a deliberate signal that most sites should never use it.

Why Disavow matters for SEO

It is one of the few actions in SEO with no meaningful undo: reversing a disavow means uploading an empty file and waiting for Google to recrawl every domain you cut. Google's own guidance is that it routinely ignores low-quality links without any action from you, so disavowing on suspicion risks removing value that was helping.

Pro tip on Disavow

Use it in two situations only: you have a manual action for unnatural links, or you or an agency built links you can identify. Otherwise leave it alone. A third-party toxicity score is a vendor's model rather than evidence Google acted, and an empty Manual actions report is the signal that matters.
