What Is Google Discover?

Google Discover is the personalised content feed in the Google app and on the Chrome mobile home screen. It surfaces content based on a person's interests and activity rather than in response to a query, which makes it a push surface rather than a search results page. Search Console has reported on it since April 2019.

Why Google Discover matters for SEO

Discover can send very large volumes of traffic to timely content and almost nothing to evergreen reference pages, and it arrives in spikes rather than as a plateau you build. Because there is no query, none of the usual keyword work applies, and a story ending its run looks identical on a chart to a penalty.

Pro tip on Google Discover

The levers Google names are a large, high-quality image with max-image-preview:large, being indexed at all, genuine timeliness or topical interest, and titles that describe rather than oversell. Structured data earns nothing here: the report's appearance types are formats such as AMP, Web Stories and video rather than anything schema creates.

Google Discover vs Google Search

Search answers a query someone typed and ranks results. Discover pushes content to someone who typed nothing, so it has no queries and no ranked position, which is why its report drops both fields.
