What Is KD (Keyword Difficulty)?

Keyword difficulty is a tool-generated score, usually 0 to 100, estimating how hard it would be to rank on the first page for a query. Every tool calculates it differently, most commonly from the backlink profiles of the pages currently ranking.

Why KD (Keyword Difficulty) matters for SEO

It is an estimate from a third party, not a measurement, and scores for the same keyword differ substantially between tools. Treating KD as an objective property of a keyword rather than one vendor's model is a common source of bad prioritisation.

Pro tip on KD (Keyword Difficulty)

Use KD to sort a list, not to make go or no-go decisions. Check what the current results actually are: a low-KD term dominated by strong brands is harder than the number suggests, and a high-KD term with weak, outdated results may be winnable.
