Choosing tools

What SEO Tool Should I Use Instead of Semrush?

Most people use a tenth of Semrush and pay for all of it. List the jobs you actually do, then pick the cheapest tool that does each one well.

How to replace Semrush by job: list what you actually used last month, site audits and Search Console insights go to CrawlRaven one-time, backlink research goes to a dedicated link index, all-in-one on a budget goes to SE Ranking, then compare a year of each.

Short answer

Pick by the job, not the brand. Most people use a fraction of Semrush. For site audits and Search Console insights, CrawlRaven is a one-time licence instead of $139.95 a month. For backlink research, Ahrefs has the strongest index. For a cheaper all-in-one, SE Ranking covers most of the same ground with higher limits.

Start with the jobs, not the tools

Semrush bundles more than a dozen tools, and most subscribers use two or three of them. So the useful question is not "which tool is like Semrush", it is "which jobs was I actually doing in there". Open your history and check what you touched last month.

Then replace each job with the cheapest tool that does it well:

The 12-month math

Subscriptions hide their real cost in the monthly framing. Multiply by twelve and the comparison gets honest:

The 12-month math

What one year of each tool costs

ToolPriceOne year
Semrush Pro$139.95/mo$1,679.40
Semrush Guru$249.95/mo$2,999.40
Ahrefs Lite$129/mo$1,548
SE Ranking Core$129/mo$1,548
SE Ranking Core, annual$103.20/mo$1,238.40
CrawlRavenOne-time$49 at launch, once

Monthly price times twelve. Verified against vendor pricing pages, July to August 2026. The CrawlRaven launch price is historical; the current batch is on the pricing page.

The math is the whole argument for replacing by job. If your jobs are audits and your own search data, a one-time licence does them for less than one month of the subscription. If your jobs genuinely need a keyword database, a subscription is the honest price of one, and the table shows who charges least for it.

For audits and Search Console insights

This is the job CrawlRaven exists for. It joins four datasets Semrush keeps in separate reports, or does not have at all:

  • Your Search Console data, connected with one sign-in, so findings are sized by the traffic actually at stake.
  • Your GA4 engagement, so a page that ranks and loses visitors is not counted as a win.
  • Your imported keyword lists, from Ahrefs or Semrush exports, so the plan you had meets the rankings you have.
  • A 200-point crawl, ranked by likely ranking impact, against Semrush's roughly 140 checks.

Pricing is a one-time lifetime licence: $49 at launch for 3 sites, $99 for the 10-site white-label tier. Lifetime pricing steps up as licenses sell, so check the pricing page for the current batch. There is also a free plan for one site, which is the honest way to test whether the audit job is really your job.

The MCP server is included, so the dashboard becomes optional. Ask the question instead of finding the report:

The report you used to build by hand
For [your site]: compare the last 28 days with the previous period, list the pages and queries that moved most, and give me the three highest-impact opportunities with their evidence.

For a cheaper all-in-one

If you genuinely use the breadth, keyword research, rank tracking, and audits in one login, replace the bundle with a cheaper bundle:

  • SE Ranking is the closest value match: Core at $129 a month includes 10 projects and 2,000 daily-tracked keywords, against Semrush Pro's 5 projects and 500 keywords at $139.95. Verified July 2026. Our SE Ranking pricing breakdown covers the add-ons that change the real total.
  • Watch the annual math. SE Ranking's annual discount is a flat 20%, larger than Semrush's roughly 16 to 17%.

If your daily job is link analysis, the replacement is Ahrefs: the larger, fresher link index, at $129 a month for Lite. For quick one-off checks, our free domain rating checker reads a domain's authority metrics without a subscription, and the Ahrefs alternatives roundup covers the cheaper index options.

Tracking how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews mention your site is the newest job on the list, and it is priced like one. Semrush sells it as the Semrush One bundle from $199 a month. Before paying that, check what the job actually needs:

  • AI readiness is an audit job. Whether AI crawlers can reach and read your site is part of CrawlRaven's 200-point audit, not a separate subscription.
  • Mention tracking is a separate market. Dedicated tools do it cheaper than the big bundles. Our AI SEO tools roundup compares them with verified prices.
  • Start by asking the engines directly. Type your best queries into ChatGPT and Perplexity and see who gets cited. It is free, and it tells you whether the paid tracking is worth having.

When staying on Semrush is the right call

An honest replacement guide says when not to replace. Stay if any of these is your daily work:

  • You run organic and paid search together. The SEO plus PPC crossover data is genuinely unique to Semrush.
  • You do international keyword research. Its non-English keyword data is the deepest available.
  • Your agency lives in Guru's content and reporting tools and the $249.95 a month is billed to clients anyway.

If that is you, the cheaper move is keeping Semrush and cancelling the tools that duplicate it, not the other way round.

How to switch without losing data

Three steps, in order, before the subscription lapses:

  1. Export your keyword lists and rank history. Position history cannot be rebuilt after cancelling. CrawlRaven imports Semrush and Ahrefs keyword exports directly, so the list keeps working.
  2. Confirm Search Console is verified and connected. Your own search data never lived in Semrush. It stays with Google either way.
  3. Run the new tool alongside for one billing cycle. If a job you forgot surfaces in that month, you learn it before the old data is gone.
Opinion· The test before you buy anything
Write down every Semrush report you opened in the last 30 days. Not the features you like knowing exist, the ones you opened. Most people's list has two or three entries, and the replacement for two or three jobs is rarely another fourteen-tool subscription.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cheap alternative to Semrush?

It depends on the job. For site audits and Search Console insights, CrawlRaven is a one-time licence instead of a subscription. For a full all-in-one, SE Ranking Core at $129 a month covers most of the same ground with higher tracking limits than Semrush Pro at $139.95. For backlinks, Ahrefs Lite at $129 a month has the stronger index. Prices verified July to August 2026.

Is there a free alternative to Semrush?

For some jobs, yes. Google Search Console covers your own rankings, queries, and indexing for free, and it is Google's own data rather than an estimate. Free single-purpose tools cover audits one check at a time. What has no good free replacement is competitor keyword research and backlink indexes, which need a paid crawler behind them.

Why is Semrush so expensive?

Because it bundles more than a dozen tools, and the price covers all of them whether you use them or not. Pro is $139.95 a month, content tools need Guru at $249.95, and extra seats cost more. If you use three of its fourteen tools, you are paying for eleven you do not open. That is the case for replacing by job.

Can CrawlRaven fully replace Semrush?

No, and it does not try to. CrawlRaven replaces the audit and insight jobs: a 200-point crawl joined with your Search Console and GA4 data into one ranked plan, as a one-time licence. It does not do competitor keyword databases or backlink indexes. If those are your daily jobs, pair it with a tool that does them, or stay on an all-in-one.

Is SE Ranking as good as Semrush?

For the core jobs, close, at a lower price. SE Ranking Core at $129 a month includes 10 projects and 2,000 daily-tracked keywords against Semrush Pro's 5 projects and 500 keywords at $139.95. Semrush keeps the edge on database size, PPC data, and content tools. Prices verified July 2026.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?

For backlinks, yes: Ahrefs has the larger, fresher link index, and that is the job people pick it for. For an all-in-one, Semrush is broader, with PPC data and content tools Ahrefs does not match. Both cost real money monthly, so the question is which job you are actually paying for.

What do I lose if I cancel Semrush?

Your historical position-tracking data and project setups, so export them before cancelling. You do not lose your own search data: everything in Google Search Console stays, because it is Google's record, not Semrush's. Rank history from any tool can be rebuilt going forward; your GSC history cannot be exported by anyone but you.

Do I even need a Semrush replacement?

Check what you used last month before buying anything. If you mostly checked your own rankings and traffic, Google Search Console does that free, and the 20-minute check covers site health. Buy a replacement for the jobs you actually do weekly, not for the fear of missing a feature you never opened.

What is the difference between a one-time licence and a subscription?

A subscription charges monthly forever and stops working when you stop paying. A one-time licence is paid once and keeps working. CrawlRaven launched at $49 one-time for 3 sites and $99 for the white-label tier, against $1,679.40 for one year of Semrush Pro. Lifetime pricing steps up as batches sell, so the current price is on the pricing page.

Can an AI assistant replace an SEO tool like Semrush?

Not on its own, because an assistant has no data about your site until you connect some. Connected to the CrawlRaven MCP server, an assistant reads your real Search Console performance, pages, queries, and ranked opportunities, and answers the questions you used to open a dashboard for. The data connection is what does the replacing, not the AI.
