8 September: position for AI results

A Reddit user in r/SEO asked how Search Console counts impressions for AI results. Mueller said Google tracks AI results as one block, as it does for many search features. The generative AI report does not show a position for them.

Search results pages have a lot of ways for users to interact nowadays, so the old "position 1 - 10" is hard to map, or to make useful for site owners.

John MuellerSearch Advocate, GoogleReddit, r/SEO, 8 September 2026

He then asked the thread for ideas on useful position tracking. He said he would discuss them with his team. Search Engine Roundtable reported the reply on 10 September.

29 August: markdown pages for AI crawlers

A Reddit user in r/TechSEO asked whether anyone had seen results from serving markdown versions of pages to AI systems. Mueller shared what he saw on his own sites:

On my test sites the only crawlers who claim to accept markdown are SEO tools. Ymmv.

John MuellerSearch Advocate, GoogleReddit, r/TechSEO, 29 August 2026

In the same comment, he gave two tips:

  • Log the Accept header first. His own servers do not log it. Set up logging so you can see whether any crawler asks for markdown.
  • Check the numbers before you build anything. In his words: "If you're curious about your sites, I'd recommend figuring out how to log that and checking the metrics first."

He put it more bluntly on Bluesky on 3 February 2026: "Converting pages to markdown is such a stupid idea."

20 August: no special steps for AI answers

A Bluesky user asked whether GEO matters yet in industries such as adult or gambling sites. Mueller answered for Google Search as a whole:

I'm not quite sure what you're asking; from our POV there's nothing really special you need to do for generative AI responses in search.

John MuellerSearch Advocate, GoogleBluesky, 20 August 2026

"Our POV" means Google's view. His reply does not cover ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity. Our post on whether SEO is dead in 2026 explains why his advice still makes sense. AI answers use pages that search engines already crawl, index and rank.

23 June: what counts as an AI impression

Google added a generative AI report to Search Console in June 2026. A Bluesky user asked what counts as an impression in it. Mueller replied:

The impressions are based on links to your site being shown in AI Overviews / AI Mode. I don't know if just a favicon would be linked, but if it's linked to a page on your site, that would count. If something needs to be "activated" to see the link, it would only count when users do that.

John MuellerSearch Advocate, GoogleBluesky, 23 June 2026

On 1 July, he confirmed that Search Console counts a link when someone clicks to expand it. The infographic and list below cover the four cases.

Search Console, generative AI report

What counts as an AI impression

A link to a page on your site, shown in an AI Overview or AI Mode
Search Console counts it
Counts
A link the reader only sees after expanding the AI answer
Search Console counts it only after someone expands it
Only if expanded
Only your site's favicon
Mueller said he did not know if a favicon alone gets a link
Unclear
Your brand named in the answer, with no link
Mueller did not say. We infer it because Search Console counts links
Likely not
  • A link to your page in an AI Overview or AI Mode: Search Console counts it.
  • A link that shows only after someone expands the answer: Search Console counts it only after the expansion.
  • Only your favicon: unclear. Mueller said he did not know whether a favicon alone gets a link.
  • Your brand name with no link: probably not counted. Mueller did not say this. We infer it because he said impressions are "based on links".

Our breakdown of the Search Console AI performance reports covers what the report shows and what it leaves out.

31 May: llms.txt

A Reddit thread asked whether Google was "saying two different things" about llms.txt. Mueller wrote:

I don't think anyone knows - it's purely speculative for now (the file has existed for years, yet none of the AI systems use it -- what does it mean?).

John MuellerSearch Advocate, GoogleReddit, r/SEO, 31 May 2026

Earlier that day, he suggested a simple rule: create the file if an AI platform that sends you customers asks for it. In April 2025, he wrote: "To me, it's comparable to the keywords meta tag". Our llms.txt glossary entry and our llms.txt generator give the same advice.

15 May: Google's guide to AI features

Mueller posted Google's announcement of a new guide to optimizing for generative AI in Google Search. Google's post says the guide covers:

  • Why valuable, unique, non-commodity content matters.
  • Local, shopping, image and video content.
  • Common "AEO/GEO" myths.
  • Early guidance on AI agents.
  • Why SEO best practices still matter for Google's generative AI features.

7 January: SEO or GEO?

A Reddit user asked whether SEO was still enough or whether they needed to think about GEO too. Mueller replied:

If you have an online business that makes money from referred traffic, it's definitely a good idea to consider the full picture, and prioritize accordingly. What you call it doesn't matter, but "AI" is not going away, but thinking about how your site's value works in a world where "AI" is available is worth the time.

Also, be realistic and look at actual usage metrics and understand your audience (what % is using "AI"? what % is using Facebook? what does it mean for where you spend your time?).

John MuellerSearch Advocate, GoogleReddit, r/SEO, 7 January 2026

The user later deleted the question. Search Engine Land's coverage still shows its title.

Before you pay for a new AI visibility tactic, check what Mueller has said about it. He has already answered questions on llms.txt, markdown pages and special GEO steps. If your AI report looks strange, remember that Google has not found a good way to show position for AI results yet.

Opinion· Aditi's take

I pay most attention when a Googler says Google's own tools fall short. Mueller did that in September when he asked for ideas on position tracking.

I skip new AI files until an AI company says it reads them. I also do not read the AI impressions report as a ranking report, because it shows no position.

His role at Google and where he posts

Google's Search Central author page lists him as a Search Advocate who coordinates Google Search Relations. Google's podcast page lists him as Search Relations Lead and says he is based in Switzerland.

His own site says he is a Search Advocate at Google Zürich and a former Webmaster Trends Analyst. It also says he ran a small software company in Switzerland before he joined Google.

You can find him here:

  • Reddit: u/johnmu, in subreddits such as r/SEO and r/TechSEO. He posted most of the 2026 statements above there.
  • Bluesky: johnmu.com. His site and Google's author page both link to this account.
  • Search Off the Record: He co-hosts Google's Search podcast with Gary Illyes, Lizzi Sassman and Martin Splitt.
  • The Search Central blog: He posts official Google announcements there, such as the May 2026 post on generative AI.

How to use his replies

News sites often repeat his short replies without the question he answered. Four habits help you read them correctly:

  1. Read the question he answered. His 20 August reply began "I'm not quite sure what you're asking". A one-line answer covers only what someone asked.
  2. Check the scope. "On my test sites" and "Ymmv" mean he is talking about his own sites, not all of Google.
  3. Use the date he posted. Search Engine Roundtable covered his 8 September reply on 10 September, and his 20 August reply on 25 August.
  4. Check Google's documentation. If a reply and the documentation differ, follow the documentation. The May 2026 AI guide is a good place to start.

Test his advice on your own data

In January, Mueller told site owners to look at actual usage metrics before they decide how much AI matters. Your Search Console data answers part of that question. Connect CrawlRaven's MCP server (paid plans) and run these two prompts:

Where AI answers may be taking clicks
For [your site], compare the last 3 months with the same 3 months last year. Split my queries into question queries (what, how, why, is, does) and everything else. For each group, show impressions, clicks and average position, and list the queries where impressions held but clicks fell by more than 30%.
Ranking loss or answer-box loss?
List the 20 pages on [your site] that lost the most clicks in the last 90 days. For each, tell me whether average position also fell. Mark the ones where position held and clicks fell, because those are the pages where something on the results page changed.

The second prompt separates two problems. If a page kept its position and lost clicks, the results page changed. If a page lost position, it has a normal ranking problem. The MCP documentation lists the data the connection can read.

What the prompts cannot show

  • Citations in ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity. None of them report data to site owners. Our page on whether there is a Search Console for ChatGPT explains why.
  • Why clicks fell. The data shows that clicks dropped while position held. It does not show the AI Overview, snippet or ad that took the click.
  • Whether a Mueller reply applies to your site. You still need to read the thread and Google's documentation.

Do this now: the 10-minute version

  1. Open the original post. Follow the news story's link to the Reddit comment or Bluesky post.
  2. Note the date he posted. News coverage often comes days later.
  3. Check Google's documentation. Start with the generative AI guide.
  4. Skip files that no AI company reads. Wait on llms.txt and markdown copies until a company says it uses them.
  5. Test the advice on your own data. Compare clicks and impressions by query type with the prompts above.

Frequently asked questions

What is John Mueller's job title at Google?

Google's Search Central blog lists John Mueller as a Search Advocate. Google's Search Off the Record podcast page lists him as Search Relations Lead and says he leads the Search Relations team. His own website calls him a Search Advocate at Google Zürich and a former Webmaster Trends Analyst.

Where is John Mueller based?

In Switzerland. Google's Search Off the Record podcast page says he is based in Switzerland. His own website says he works at Google Zürich. It also says he ran a small software company in Switzerland before he joined Google.

Is John Mueller on Reddit?

Yes. He posts as u/johnmu in subreddits such as r/SEO and r/TechSEO. Search Engine Roundtable, Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land often report his replies. In 2026, he posted his comments on AI result positions, markdown pages and llms.txt on Reddit.

Is John Mueller on Bluesky?

Yes, as johnmu.com. His website and Google's author page both link to this account. In June 2026, he explained on Bluesky how Search Console counts AI impressions. In August 2026, he said there that sites need nothing special for AI answers in Google Search.

What has John Mueller said about AI Overviews?

He said three things in 2026. Search Console counts an AI impression when AI Overviews or AI Mode show a link to your site. It counts a hidden link only after someone expands it. It tracks AI results as one block with no position, because the old position 1 to 10 is hard to map.

What does John Mueller say about GEO?

He says the name does not matter. In January 2026, he told a Reddit user to look at actual usage metrics and understand their audience. In August 2026, he said sites need nothing special for generative AI responses in Google Search.

What does John Mueller say about llms.txt?

He says no AI system uses it. In April 2025, he compared llms.txt to the keywords meta tag. In May 2026, he called its usefulness purely speculative for now. He noted that the file has existed for years and none of the AI systems use it.

Should I serve markdown pages to AI crawlers?

Not yet. In August 2026, John Mueller said that on his test sites, only SEO tools claimed to accept markdown. He suggested you log the Accept header on your own server first. Then you can see whether any crawler asks for markdown before you build anything.

Does a brand mention in an AI Overview count as an impression?

Probably not. John Mueller said Search Console bases AI impressions on links to your site in AI Overviews and AI Mode. He did not mention brand names without links. A brand name with no link gives Search Console nothing to count. He also said he did not know whether a favicon alone gets a link.

Does John Mueller speak for Google?

He works for Google, and his job is to explain Google Search. His replies are well informed and often the fastest answer you can get. But he writes them quickly. If a reply and Google's Search Central documentation differ, follow the documentation.

What is Search Off the Record?

Search Off the Record is Google's podcast about Search. The Search Relations team makes it. Google's podcast page lists four hosts: John Mueller, Gary Illyes, Lizzi Sassman and Martin Splitt. Danny Sullivan joined the 17 December 2025 episode on SEO and SEO for AI.

What is the difference between John Mueller and Danny Sullivan?

Both work on Google Search in different roles. John Mueller leads the Search Relations team and answers site owners' questions in public. Danny Sullivan served as Google's Search Liaison until August 2025. Sullivan then moved to a director role within Google Search, according to Search Engine Land.
