Clearscope Review: It Dropped to $129 and Pivoted to AI Search
Clearscope now starts at $129/mo, down from $189, and tracks ChatGPT prompts next to its content grades. What the pivot changed, and who should pay for it.
Clearscope is still the most trusted content grader in SEO, and in 2026 it is also a cheaper, wider product than the one most reviews describe.
- Rating: 3.8/5. Best-in-class at the one thing it does, but narrow: no crawl, no backlinks, no rank tracking.
- Pricing: Essentials $129/month and Business $399/month, verified August 2026. That is down from the $189 Essentials price most older reviews quote.
- What changed: Plans are now measured in tracked prompts, pages, topic explorations, and drafts. Essentials includes 50 prompts tracked across ChatGPT and Gemini.
- The honest AI-era catch: When a capable model writes the draft, term coverage is close to free. The grade becomes a quality gate rather than a source of lift.
- Ratings: 4.9/5 on G2 from 91 reviews and 4.9/5 on Capterra from 60 reviews, with value for money the lowest sub-score at 4.7.
- What it will not tell you: Which page to write, refresh, or fix first. That join lives in CrawlRaven, from a one-time $49 at launch.
The rest of this review covers the features, the verified pricing math, how the grade holds up against AI drafting, and where Surfer SEO and SE Ranking fit instead.
Most Clearscope reviews still quote $189 a month and describe a pure content grader. Neither is current. In August 2026 Essentials lists at $129, plans are measured in tracked prompts, and the homepage leads with getting discovered in ChatGPT. Try CrawlRaven free: 1 site, no credit card →
The first thing I checked on Clearscope's pricing page was the number every other review quotes: $189 a month for Essentials. It is not there. In August 2026 Essentials lists at $129, and the plan is counted in tracked prompts, not content reports.
That is a bigger change than a discount. Clearscope spent nine years selling one thing better than anyone: a letter grade for your draft. The 2026 product still does that, and it now also watches whether ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand. Here is whether that combination is worth the money.
The verdict up front
Clearscope scores 3.8 out of 5. It is the best content grader on the market and it is priced lower than it used to be, but it remains a narrow tool that solves the smallest part of an SEO problem. I rate reviewed tools on five criteria:
- Optimization quality: how accurate and actionable the recommendations are. Clearscope's grade is the category benchmark.
- Workflow and integrations: whether writers actually use it. Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and WordPress, with unlimited seats.
- AI-era relevance: whether the job still exists when a model writes the draft. Partly, and the prompt tracking helps.
- Pricing value: cost against what you get. Cheaper than before, still $1,548 a year with no free tier.
- Scope: how much of the SEO job it covers. This is where it loses points, and loses them fairly.
Clearscope rated on five criteria
The A++ to F grade is still the most trusted score in the category
Google Docs, Microsoft Word and WordPress, plus unlimited users on every plan
Prompt tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini now ships on every tier
$129/mo entry, no free plan, and only 50 pages of inventory
No technical crawl, no backlinks, no rank tracking, thin keyword research
Key Takeaways
- →Price verified: Essentials $129/month, Business $399/month, Enterprise by quote (clearscope.io/pricing, August 2026).
- →It repositioned: Plans now include tracked prompts across ChatGPT and Gemini: 50 on Essentials, 300 on Business.
- →Reviewers love it: 4.9/5 on G2 (91 reviews) and 4.9/5 on Capterra (60 reviews). Value for money is the weakest sub-score at 4.7.
- →The gap it leaves: No crawl, no backlinks, no rank tracking, and no answer to which page deserves the next hour of work.
What is Clearscope?
Clearscope is a content optimization platform founded in 2016 by Bernard Huang and Kevin Su, and bootstrapped without outside funding. Its core product analyzes the pages currently ranking for a keyword and grades your draft against them.
A letter score from A++ to F for how completely your draft covers the terms, entities, and subtopics that ranking pages already cover. It is not a quality score and it is not a ranking prediction. It is a completeness check with a number attached, which is exactly why editors like it.
The 2026 platform spans five areas: topic exploration, AI drafting, the content editor with live grading, a content inventory that monitors published pages, and prompt tracking for AI search. The homepage headline is now “Get Discovered on Google, ChatGPT, and What's Next,” which tells you where the roadmap went.
Clearscope's key features
Seven capabilities matter when you are deciding, and they are not equally good:
- Content editor with live grading. The reason people buy it. Paste or write a draft, watch the grade move as you cover missing terms. Accurate, fast, and legible to writers who know nothing about SEO.
- Term and entity recommendations. Built on natural language processing rather than raw keyword counting, which is why the suggestions read as topics instead of stuffing instructions.
- Topic exploration. Maps a subject into the pages and clusters worth building. Capped at 20 a month on Essentials and 50 on Business, which is the real constraint on the plan.
- AI drafting. Generates a first draft against the report. Competent, not a reason to buy, and capped at 20 drafts a month on both paid tiers.
- Content inventory. Monitors published pages and their performance over time. Essentials covers 50 pages, Business 300, with extras at $25 and $15 per month respectively.
- Prompt tracking. The 2026 addition. Track specific prompts across ChatGPT and Gemini to see when your brand gets mentioned, plus the background searches those systems run to build an answer.
- Integrations. Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and WordPress, so the grade appears where writing already happens rather than in a tab nobody opens.
What is missing is as important as what ships. There is no crawler, no backlink index, no rank tracker, and the keyword research is thin enough that a Capterra reviewer called it basic. Clearscope has never pretended otherwise.
Clearscope pricing, verified August 2026
I checked clearscope.io/pricing in August 2026. Three plans, priced monthly, with no annual discount advertised and no minimum contract:
- Essentials, $129/month: 50 tracked prompts, 50 pages, 20 monthly topic explorations, 20 monthly drafts.
- Business, $399/month: 300 tracked prompts, 300 pages, 50 monthly topic explorations, 20 monthly drafts, plus a dedicated account manager.
- Enterprise, custom: everything in Business with custom credits, custom agreements, crawler whitelisting, and single sign-on.
- Add-ons: extra pages cost $25/month on Essentials and $15/month on Business; extra drafts are $50 per batch on Essentials and $20 on Business.
- Every plan: unlimited users and projects, a 14-day free trial, and no free tier.

Two things to flag honestly. The entry price came down from $189, so any review quoting that number predates the repricing. And the old Essentials plan included 100 content inventory pages against today's 50, so the cheaper plan is also a smaller one.
What Clearscope costs over 1 and 3 years
Content tools are recurring, so the number that matters is the multi-year one. Essentials runs $1,548 a year and $4,644 over three. Business runs $4,788 a year and $14,364 over three.
| Option | Model | 1-year cost | 3-year cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clearscope Essentials | $129/month | $1,548 | $4,644 |
| Clearscope Business | $399/month | $4,788 | $14,364 |
| Clearscope Enterprise | Annual quote | – | – |
| Surfer SEO (entry) | from $89/month | $1,068 | $3,204 |
| SE Ranking Core | $129/month | $1,548 | $4,644 |
| CrawlRaven | One-time lifetime license | $49 once (launch) | $49 total |
CrawlRaven is our tool and it does a different job, so treat that last row as context rather than a like-for-like swap. Lifetime licenses start at a one-time $49 at launch, with a free plan for 1 site. Lifetime pricing steps up as licenses sell, so check the pricing page for the current batch. See current pricing.
Does content grading still matter when AI writes the draft?
This is the question that decides whether Clearscope belongs in a 2026 budget, and the honest answer is uncomfortable for the whole category. Term coverage used to be scarce. A human writer working from their own knowledge would miss a third of the subtopics that ranking pages covered, and the report closed that gap.
A capable language model does not miss them. Ask it for an article on a subject and it produces broad semantic coverage by default, because breadth is what the model is good at. Run that draft through Clearscope and it often grades well before you change anything.
Does Clearscope earn its seat in 2026?
| Your situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial team briefing 20+ human writers a month | Worth it | The grade is a shared quality bar that survives freelancer churn |
| AI drafts everything, an editor polishes | Marginal | A capable model already covers most terms, so the grade mostly confirms what you have |
| Refreshing decayed pages that used to rank | Marginal | Good at telling you how to rewrite, useless at telling you which page decayed |
| Tracking whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite your brand | Worth it | 50 tracked prompts ship on the $129/mo Essentials plan |
| Solo consultant publishing 2 to 4 posts a month | Skip it | $1,548 a year against a handful of drafts, and no free tier to grow into |
| You need the technical reasons pages are not ranking | Skip it | No crawl, no index diagnostics, no Search Console join at any tier |
So the value shifts rather than disappearing. What a grading tool is still worth paying for:
- An editorial standard at volume. When 20 freelancers submit, a shared numeric bar is a governance tool, not a writing aid. That is worth real money and nothing else replaces it cleanly.
- Scoping before drafting. Topic exploration decides what a page should cover. That decision still precedes the model and still benefits from ranking data.
- Proof of work for clients. A grade is a defensible artifact in a report. Cynical, but it is why agencies renew.
- The AI visibility layer. Prompt tracking is a genuinely new job, and shipping it on the $129 tier is more generous than most dedicated trackers.
And the risk nobody in the category likes discussing: grading rewards resemblance to what already ranks. Applied to AI-written drafts that are already regression-to-the-mean by construction, it can push a page toward being more average, not more useful.
Clearscope in practice
Reading the product against nine years of reputation, three things consistently hold up:
- Report accuracy. Users describe the term recommendations as trustworthy enough to hand to writers unsupervised, which is the highest compliment this category gets.
- Speed to usable output. Reports return quickly and the editor grades as you type, so the feedback loop is short enough that writers do not abandon it.
- Restraint. Clearscope has resisted bolting on rank tracking and backlink modules. The result is a tool that does one thing without a settings maze.
The weak points are equally consistent. Keyword research is shallow against a real research platform, the plan caps bite quickly if you publish at volume, and the content inventory is a monitoring surface rather than a diagnostic one. It will show you a page slipping. It will not tell you why.
Interface and daily workflow
Setup is genuinely fast: create a project, run a report on a target keyword, share the link. There is no onboarding call, no implementation phase, and no per-seat maths, because every plan carries unlimited users and projects.
- For writers: the Google Docs add-on is the whole product. The grade and term list sit beside the draft, so nobody has to learn a platform.
- For editors: the grade is a pass or fail gate you can put in a brief and a contract. That is the workflow most teams actually buy.
- For managers: the content inventory and prompt tracking are the reporting surface, and both are capped by plan rather than by seat.
- Learning curve: effectively none. Capterra rates ease of use 4.9/5, the joint-highest of its sub-scores.
Pros and cons
Scored as an August 2026 purchase, at the new price:
- ✓The most trusted content grade in the category, legible to writers with no SEO background
- ✓Entry price dropped to $129/month from $189, with no annual contract and a 14-day trial
- ✓Unlimited users and projects on every plan, so team size never changes the bill
- ✓Prompt tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini included from the $129 tier, 50 prompts on Essentials
- ✓Native Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and WordPress integrations put the grade where writing happens
- ✓4.9/5 on G2 across 91 reviews and 4.9/5 on Capterra across 60, unusually high for the category
- ✗No free plan, and $1,548 a year is hard to justify below roughly 10 published pages a month
- ✗Essentials now includes 50 pages of content inventory, down from 100 at the old $189 price
- ✗Keyword research is basic; reviewers say so directly and it is not positioned as a research tool
- ✗No crawler, no backlink data, no rank tracking, so it cannot explain a technical ranking failure
- ✗Topic explorations capped at 20 a month on Essentials, which constrains bigger content operations
- ✗The grade produces less lift on AI-assisted drafts, which already cover most recommended terms
Who Clearscope is best for
- In-house content teams with real editorial volume. If ten or more pages ship a month through multiple writers, the shared grade pays for itself in review time alone.
- Agencies with unlimited-seat needs. Every plan carries unlimited users, so adding freelancers costs nothing. This is the structural reason agencies rate it so highly.
- Teams already running an SEO platform. Clearscope is a complement. It shines when rank tracking, research, and technical auditing are handled elsewhere.
- Brands starting AI visibility work. Getting 50 tracked prompts inside a tool your writers already use beats buying a separate tracker for a pilot.
Who should skip it
- Solo consultants and small blogs. Two to four posts a month against $1,548 a year is a poor trade. Cheaper content editors cover most of the job.
- Anyone buying their first SEO tool. Optimization is the last problem to solve, not the first. You need to know what to publish before you need help grading it.
- Teams whose pages are not ranking for technical reasons. A grade cannot fix an orphaned page, a stray noindex, or a crawl budget problem.
- Anyone who needs a free tier to prove value internally. The 14-day trial is the only free path.
What reviewers say
Third-party ratings, checked August 2026, with links to the sources:
- G2: 4.9/5 from 91 reviews, among the highest scores of any SEO tool we have reviewed.
- Capterra: 4.9/5 from 60 reviews, with ease of use 4.9, customer service 4.9, features 4.8, and value for money 4.7.
“I can trust the data to guide my writers to create useful content that addresses search intent and ranks in relevant search.”
★★★★★SEO Content StrategistCapterra
“Being a customizable and flexible product makes my work process incredibly easy.”
★★★★★Content CreatorCapterra
“Their keyword tool is very basic. And It is really expensive.”
★★★★★Freelance Content WriterCapterra
The pattern in the numbers is worth naming: value for money is the lowest sub-score on Capterra at 4.7, and the criticism that recurs is price rather than quality. Nobody argues the reports are wrong. They argue the invoice is large.
Clearscope vs SE Ranking
This comparison comes up because the two tools now cost exactly the same at entry, and it is a genuine trap: $129 a month buys completely different things.
| Dimension | Clearscope Essentials | SE Ranking Core |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $129/month | $129/month ($103.20 annual) |
| Content grading | Best in category | Formulaic on-page checker |
| Rank tracking | – | Included |
| Keyword research | Basic | Included |
| Backlinks | – | Included |
| Site audit | – | Included |
| AI prompt tracking | 50 prompts | AI visibility module |
| Users | Unlimited | Seat-limited by plan |
The buying rule is simple:
- Buy SE Ranking if this is your only SEO tool. It covers tracking, research, links, and auditing for the same money, and our SE Ranking review goes through where the data holds up.
- Buy Clearscope if a platform already covers those bases and your bottleneck is content quality across multiple writers.
- Buy both if you publish seriously. SE Ranking's on-page checker compares you to competitor averages; it is not a content editor and the two are not substitutes.
Clearscope alternatives worth shortlisting
Four honest options, plus ours, positioned by the job rather than by feature count:
- Surfer SEO. The direct competitor and the usual shortlist rival: cheaper at entry, with a SERP analyzer, keyword research, and AI writing bundled in. Slightly noisier recommendations, considerably more surface area. Our Surfer SEO review has the detail, and we list Clearscope as the premium pick in our roundup of Surfer SEO alternatives.
- Cora. The opposite trade. Where Clearscope hands a writer one legible grade, Cora measures up to 2,040 on-page factors and hands you a spreadsheet to interpret yourself, for $250 a month.
- Frase and NeuronWriter. The budget end. You give up grading precision and polish, and you keep most of the practical benefit for a fraction of $1,548 a year. Both appear in the same roundup.
- SE Ranking. Not a content tool, but the honest answer when someone has $129 a month and no SEO platform at all.
- Dedicated AI visibility trackers. If prompt tracking is the actual need rather than a bonus, compare the specialists in our guide to the best AI visibility tools before paying a content tool for it.
- CrawlRaven. Our tool, and deliberately not a content editor. It joins Google Search Console and GA4 (built in, one-click OAuth) with your imported Ahrefs or Semrush keyword lists and a 200-point technical crawl, then returns one ranked plan: what to write, what to update, what to fix first. From a one-time $49 at launch.
- Free stopgap: Much of what a grade rewards is coverage and length against what already ranks. Our free page word counter measures that side of it on any URL, which is enough to sanity-check a draft below ten posts a month.
The two sit on either side of the same workflow. CrawlRaven picks the page and tells you why it is losing; Clearscope tells the writer how to cover it. Neither replaces the other, and a team doing both jobs badly usually has the first one missing.
Frequently asked questions
Basics
- What is a Clearscope content grade? A letter score from A++ to F for how completely your draft covers the terms, entities, and subtopics that currently ranking pages cover. It is a completeness benchmark, not a ranking prediction.
- Does Clearscope do technical SEO? No. No crawler, no index diagnostics, no backlink data, no rank tracking. Its Pages allocation is a content inventory, not a site crawl.
- Where does the grade appear? In the web editor and in the Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and WordPress integrations, which is how it reaches writers who never open the platform.
Pricing
- How much is Clearscope? $129/month for Essentials and $399/month for Business, with Enterprise by quote (verified August 2026). Essentials works out to $1,548 a year and $4,644 over three.
- Why do other reviews say $189? Because that was the previous Essentials price. The current plan is cheaper and smaller: 50 pages of content inventory where the old one carried 100.
- Is there a free plan? No, only a 14-day trial. There is no minimum contract on the monthly plans.
Comparisons
- SE Ranking vs Clearscope? Same $129 entry price, different products. SE Ranking is an all-in-one platform with tracking, research, links, and audits; Clearscope is a content grader. Details in our SE Ranking review.
- Clearscope or Surfer SEO? Clearscope for grading accuracy and simplicity, Surfer for more features at a lower entry price. Compare in our Surfer SEO review.
- What is the cheapest credible alternative? Frase or NeuronWriter, both covered in our Surfer SEO alternatives roundup.
Final verdict: is Clearscope worth $129 a month?
3.8 out of 5. Clearscope is excellent at a job that has become smaller. The grade is still the most trusted number in content optimization, the price came down, and the prompt tracking is a real addition rather than a press release. It also still cannot tell you which page deserves the work.
- Buy it if you publish roughly ten or more pages a month through multiple writers and need one editorial standard everyone accepts.
- Trial it if you are curious about AI prompt tracking and want it inside a tool your writers already open. Fourteen days is enough to judge.
- Skip it if you publish a few posts a month, or if your pages are losing clicks for reasons a word count and a term list cannot explain.
- Pair it with something that decides the queue. CrawlRaven joins Search Console, GA4, and a 200-point crawl into one ranked plan, from a one-time $49 at launch, with a free plan to start.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Clearscope cost in 2026?
Clearscope has three plans as of August 2026: Essentials at $129/month, Business at $399/month, and Enterprise at custom pricing. Essentials includes 50 tracked prompts, 50 pages, 20 monthly topic explorations, and 20 monthly drafts. Business raises that to 300 tracked prompts, 300 pages, and 50 topic explorations, and adds a dedicated account manager. Every plan includes unlimited users and projects and a 14-day free trial. Note that Essentials previously listed at $189/month, so older reviews quote a higher figure.
Does Clearscope have a free plan or free trial?
There is a 14-day free trial but no permanent free plan. Clearscope is deliberately a premium product with no freemium tier, which is the main reason solo bloggers and small teams rate it lower than agencies do. If you want to test the workflow without paying, the trial is the only route, and there is no monthly contract to cancel afterwards.
Is Clearscope worth it now that AI writes the first draft?
It depends on which job you are hiring it for. A capable language model already covers most of the semantic terms a Clearscope report would recommend, so the grade produces less lift on an AI draft than it did on a human one. What still earns the money is the shared editorial standard across many writers, the topic exploration that scopes what a page should cover, and the new prompt tracking that shows whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite you. Small teams publishing a few posts a month will struggle to justify $1,548 a year for that.
What is a Clearscope content grade?
A content grade is a letter score from A++ down to F that compares your draft against the pages currently ranking for your target keyword. Clearscope analyzes the top results, extracts the terms, entities, questions, and subtopics they consistently cover, then grades your coverage against that benchmark and shows the specific terms you are missing. It is the most widely trusted score of its kind, which is why editorial teams use it as a pass or fail gate for freelance submissions.
Clearscope vs SE Ranking: which should I buy?
They are not substitutes, and they happen to cost the same. Clearscope Essentials is $129/month for content grading, topic research, AI drafting, and prompt tracking. SE Ranking Core is also $129/month but covers rank tracking, keyword research, backlinks, competitor research, and a site audit. If you already have an all-in-one platform and your bottleneck is content quality, buy Clearscope. If you have nothing and need SEO coverage across the board, buy SE Ranking. Teams that produce a lot of content run both, because SE Ranking's on-page checker is a formulaic competitor comparison rather than a real content editor.
Is Clearscope better than Surfer SEO?
Clearscope is more accurate and simpler; Surfer SEO is cheaper and does more. Clearscope's grading is the category benchmark and its interface is deliberately minimal, while Surfer bundles a SERP analyzer, keyword research, AI writing, and audit features at a lower entry price. Choose Clearscope when grading precision is the deliverable and you have editors who will act on it. Choose Surfer when you want more features for the money and can live with slightly noisier recommendations.
Does Clearscope do technical SEO or site audits?
No. Clearscope has no crawler, no index diagnostics, no backlink data, and no rank tracker. It grades and monitors content, and its Pages allocation is a content inventory rather than a technical crawl. If a page will not rank because it is orphaned, blocked, canonicalized away, or slow, nothing in Clearscope will surface that. You need a separate technical audit alongside it.
What are the best Clearscope alternatives?
For a cheaper content editor with more features, Surfer SEO. For the lowest price per optimized article, Frase or NeuronWriter. For an all-in-one platform where content optimization is one module among many, SE Ranking or Semrush. And for the job no content optimizer does, deciding which page to write, refresh, or fix first, CrawlRaven joins Google Search Console, GA4, and a 200-point technical crawl into one ranked plan, from a one-time $49 at launch.
