What an SEO MCP server actually is
An SEO MCP server exposes SEO data as typed tool calls over the Model Context Protocol, the open standard Anthropic published so AI clients can talk to outside services. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Codex all speak it.
The practical difference is what the model receives. Paste a screenshot of a keyword report into a chat and the model gets a picture of a table. Connect the same tool over MCP and it gets the rows, so it can filter, sort and compare instead of squinting.
That distinction matters more than any feature list, because it changes what the follow-up question costs. Asking which of these pages actually earn traffic becomes one more message rather than a second export.

- Nightwatch starts at EUR 79/month on Starter, but the MCP server needs API access, which begins on Professional at EUR 159/month. It is also explicitly unavailable during the free trial, so you cannot test it before paying.
- Ahrefs advertises a $29/month Starter tier. The MCP server is listed as a feature from Lite at $129/month, so the entry price is more than four times the headline.
- Serpstat starts at $50/month on Individual. Claude and ChatGPT integration appears on Team at $100/month.
- SEOptimer publishes cheap monthly tiers, but its API quota on those plans is a testing allowance rather than working capacity. We left it out of the ranking because its pricing page blocks automated verification, and an unverified price is worse than no price.

The cheapest plan on which the server actually turns on, which is not always the tier the vendor advertises.

What to look for in an SEO MCP server: 6 criteria
- Whose data is it. A server that reads your own Search Console, analytics and crawl answers different questions than one that resells a third-party keyword index. Most teams eventually want both, but only one of them tells you what to fix on your site.
- The qualifying plan, not the entry plan. Covered above, and the single most expensive thing to get wrong.
- Hosted or local. A hosted remote server is a URL and a browser sign-in. A local one means installing software, keeping it running, and in at least one case closing the desktop app first.
- OAuth or pasted tokens. OAuth means you sign in through a browser and the client holds a scoped grant you can revoke. Pasting a long-lived API key into a config file means a credential sitting in plain text on disk. Prefer OAuth wherever it is offered.
- Read-only or not. Most of these are read-only, which is the right default. Check it rather than assume it, and check what the write tools can reach if a server offers them.
- How the credits meter. Per call, per row, per module or per credit changes the cost of an exploratory session by an order of magnitude. This is the number that surprises people in month two.

DataForSEO published its MCP server on GitHub in April 2025 and npm the following month, which makes it one of the older options here. There is a hosted endpoint at mcp.dataforseo.com/mcp for clients that speak HTTP, so local setup is optional.

Ahrefs runs a hosted remote server at api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp, pulling live Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker and Site Audit data from your account. For backlink and competitor questions, this is the data most people mean when they ask for an SEO MCP server.

Semrush hosts its server at mcp.semrush.com/claude/v1/mcp and connects three APIs through it: Standard for core SEO data, Trends for market and competitive intelligence, and Projects for read-only access to data in projects you already run.
Authentication is OAuth, so the first connection opens a browser sign-in and reuses the grant afterwards. It is listed as an official connector in Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Screaming Frog shipped an official MCP server in SEO Spider v24, and it is the most capable technical server here. Around 29 tools cover crawl control, reports and bulk exports with field selection, URL-level inspection, screenshots and embeddings exports.
The catch is structural rather than commercial. This is a local server against a desktop application, so you need the software installed and licensed, and the GUI has to be closed before the server can read crawl data because the interface locks the database.

Firecrawl is a scraping and search service rather than an SEO platform, and it earns a place here because it does the thing the other eight cannot: fetch and read arbitrary pages. Paired with a data server, it covers competitor page analysis that no keyword API returns.

Three SEO MCP servers people assume exist and do not
Every roundup on this topic lists servers. None of them list the absences, which is strange, because the absences are what send people down a two-hour detour. All three below were verified in August 2026.
How each SEO MCP server is delivered

Widely assumed to have one. As of August 2026, none of these ship an official MCP server.
Google Search Console: no official server
Google has shipped more than 50 MCP servers, covering BigQuery, Cloud Run, Firestore, Maps, Drive, Gmail and Calendar. Google Analytics has an official one. Search Console does not, and there is no announced plan for it.
What exists instead are community wrappers around the Search Console API:

The cost is ownership. You host it, you keep it running, you handle the OAuth credentials yourself, and when Google changes the API nobody is obliged to fix it. For a personal site that is a fair trade. For client work it is a dependency with no support contract behind it.

Yoast: plugins, not a first-party server
Yoast does not ship an MCP server. What exists is a set of third-party WordPress plugins that expose Yoast fields to an agent: meta descriptions, focus keyphrases, Open Graph tags, robots meta, canonical and sitemap inclusion.

Surfer: announced, not shipped
Surfer's own site advertises an MCP integration as coming soon, with wording about connecting Surfer into an existing stack to research, brief, generate, optimize, ship and report. Picking by job: SEO, GEO or ecommerce
The head term hides three different jobs, and the right server changes depending on which one you are doing.
The technical SEO and crawl servers
For crawl-level work, the shortlist is short. Screaming Frog is the only server with genuine crawl control, and it is local. Firecrawl fetches arbitrary pages but knows nothing about SEO. CrawlRaven returns a 200-point crawl joined to Search Console and GA4, but as a ranked plan rather than raw crawl access.
If the deliverable is a prioritized fix list rather than a crawl export, a technical SEO audit is the faster route than wiring an agent to a desktop crawler.
GEO and AI visibility servers
Two servers here cover generative engine optimization directly. SE Ranking includes AI search visibility in its 180+ tools, and Nightwatch ties AI citations back to the ranking positions that earned them.
Neither tells you why an engine skipped you. That is a crawlability and structure question, which is what AI search readiness checks answer, and it is worth resolving before paying for visibility tracking.

For third-party research, SE Ranking gives the most tools per dollar at $129/month and is the rare vendor that includes MCP on every tier. Ahrefs at $129/month wins if backlinks are the actual job. DataForSEO is the cheapest serious entry at a $50 deposit with no subscription behind it.
For your own site's data, the field is nearly empty, and that is the finding worth taking away from this page. Google never shipped a Search Console MCP server, so the choice is a community wrapper you maintain yourself or a vendor that joins Search Console, GA4 and a crawl for you.

Is there an official Google Search Console MCP server?
No. As of August 2026 Google has not shipped an official Search Console MCP server, despite publishing more than 50 MCP servers covering BigQuery, Cloud Run, Firestore, Maps, Drive, Gmail and Calendar, and despite Google Analytics having an official one. The only options are community-built wrappers around the Search Console API, such as ahonn/mcp-server-gsc and AminForou/mcp-gsc. Those work, but you host them, you keep them running, and nobody supports them.
Are there any good MCP servers for SEO analysis?
Yes, nine vendors ship one worth using: CrawlRaven, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, Serpstat, Screaming Frog, Nightwatch and Firecrawl. The question that matters more than the shortlist is which plan you need before the server turns on. Nightwatch requires the Professional plan at EUR 159/month and explicitly excludes the free trial. Ahrefs requires Lite at $129/month rather than the $29 Starter tier. Serpstat requires Team at $100/month rather than Individual.
How much does an SEO MCP server cost?
Almost none are sold separately. You pay for the underlying subscription and the MCP server is included, which means the real cost is the cheapest plan that qualifies. What are the pros and cons of MCP-ready SEO tools?
The advantage is that the model reads structured data rather than a picture of a table, so follow-up questions are cheap and the output can be a deliverable rather than a chart. The disadvantages are real: most servers are read-only, so nothing gets fixed automatically; consumption is metered against API credits you may burn faster than expected; a chatty agent can spend a month's credits in an afternoon; and every server inherits the accuracy limits of the API behind it. An MCP server changes how you reach the data, not how good the data is.
Can I connect Claude to an SEO MCP server?
Yes. Claude supports remote MCP servers on claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code, and most SEO vendors now ship a hosted endpoint you add by URL. Semrush, SE Ranking, Ahrefs, DataForSEO, Serpstat, Nightwatch and CrawlRaven all offer one. The better implementations use OAuth, so you sign in through a browser and never paste an API token into a client configuration. Never paste a personal access token or a Google token into a client config when an OAuth option exists.
Do SEO MCP servers work with ChatGPT as well as Claude?
Mostly yes. MCP is an open standard, not an Anthropic-only feature, and Semrush, SE Ranking, DataForSEO and Ahrefs all document ChatGPT connectors alongside Claude. Support is not uniform: some servers are tested against Claude first and treat other clients as best effort. Client UIs also change often enough that a guide written six months ago may not match what you see, so check the vendor's own connection docs.
