SEO Panel Review: What a Free, Self-Hosted SEO Suite Really Costs

Most reviews of SEO Panel written before 2025 end with some version of “nice idea, looks abandoned.” They were right at the time. The project shipped nothing between August 2021 and September 2024.

Then it shipped four releases in eighteen months, including a full interface rebuild and its own API. So the honest question in August 2026 is not whether SEO Panel is alive. It is whether free software you have to run yourself is cheaper than software someone else runs for you.

The verdict up front

SEO Panel scores 3.2/5. It is the best multi-site rank tracker you can get for a licence fee of $0, and it is not a serious technical audit tool. Five criteria, weighted equally:

• Value for money (4.5/5): GPL v2, unlimited websites, unlimited users, no seat fees, no upsell to see your own data.
• Feature breadth (3.5/5): 15+ modules covering rank tracking, auditing, backlinks, borrowed authority metrics, analytics integration and user management.
• Data quality (2.5/5): direct SERP crawling gets rate-limited fast; dependable numbers mean proxies or the paid API.
• Ease of use (2.5/5): PHP, MySQL, cURL and a working cron job stand between you and your first ranking chart.
• Audit depth (2.0/5): the auditor checks the surface, renders no JavaScript, and prioritises nothing.

What is SEO Panel?

SEO Panel is an open-source SEO control panel, distributed under the GNU General Public License v2, that you install on your own web server. It bills itself as the world's first open-source SEO control panel for multiple websites, and it has been around since 2010.

The delivery model is the whole story. There is no account to create, no vendor holding your data, and no plan to outgrow. There is also nobody to email when the rank checker stops returning results.

• Licence: GPL v2, free forever, published on GitHub at seopanel/Seo-Panel (149 stars, 50 forks as of August 2026).
• Stack: PHP with cURL, MySQL, and a web server such as Apache. Documented PHP support runs from 5.5 through 8.
• Distribution: manual install, Docker, or one-click installers including Softaculous, Installatron, Webuzo and AMPPS.
• Track record: 1st Runner Up as Most Promising Open Source Project in the 2011 Open Source Awards, and still listed on SourceForge with version 6.0.0 dated March 26, 2026.

SEO Panel key features

SEO Panel ships 15+ modules. Four of them are the reason anyone installs it, and one of them should be left switched off.

Multi-site rank tracking

This is the module that carries the product. You add websites, attach keywords, and SEO Panel checks positions on Google, Bing and Yahoo on a schedule set by cron. There is no keyword cap, because there is no vendor metering you.

• Unlimited sites and keywords: the only real limit is what your server and your SERP data source can sustain.
• Scheduled reports: a daily cron job generates rank reports rather than making you click refresh.
• Three-tier SERP engine (6.0.0): requests fall back from DataForSEO to the SEO Panel API to a direct crawl, which is the fix for the single most common historic complaint about the tool.
• Bulk Rank Checker plugin: updated to 3.0.0 in April 2026 with website-linked campaigns and filters.

The site auditor and sitemap generator

The auditor is competent for a free module and thin against anything purpose-built. Version 5.1.0 gave it a meaningful upgrade in January 2026.

• What it checks: metadata, HTTPS, mobile detection, Open Graph tags, Twitter Cards, and basic on-page structure.
• Sitemaps: generates XML, HTML and text sitemaps, and since 5.1.0 can parse and import URLs from existing XML sitemaps.
• Speed data: pulls Google PageSpeed Insights scores per page.
• What it does not do: render JavaScript the way Googlebot does, validate structured data in depth, or rank findings by ranking impact.

That last gap is the one that matters. A list of flagged pages with no order of operations is a research task, not a plan.

Backlinks, Moz metrics, and saturation

SEO Panel does not run a web crawl of its own, so its authority and link numbers are borrowed. That is a design decision, not a defect, but it changes what you should trust.

• Moz metrics: Domain Authority, Page Authority and link counts via the Moz API, upgraded to API v3 in version 5.0.0. You supply your own Moz credentials.
• Backlink analyser: monitors links pointing at your tracked sites, with a directory of what was found and when.
• Search engine saturation: tracks how many of your pages each engine has indexed, which is a genuinely useful early warning for crawl budget problems.
• Social and review modules: a social media checker and a review manager, both light.

Integrations, plugins, and the API

SEO Panel connects to Google Analytics and Google Search Console, and version 6.0.0 added its own API so an installation can pull hosted SERP and keyword data instead of crawling for it.

• Plugin ecosystem: still shipping, with Blog Community 3.0.0 in June 2026, Newsletter 3.0.0 in April 2026, and Social Bookmarker 2.0.0 in April 2026.
• Multi-level users: admin, manager and user roles, which is what makes it workable for an agency with staff.
• Proxy manager: a built-in place to rotate proxies, which exists because direct SERP crawling gets blocked.
• 45 languages: version 5.1.0 added 14 new ones.

The module you should ignore

SEO Panel still ships automatic directory submission, and it is still one of the first features listed on the project's own README. Do not use it.

Bulk directory submission was a legitimate tactic in 2010 and has been a link-scheme risk since roughly 2012. The most-upvoted negative review on SourceForge, from December 2011, already complained that the bundled directory list contained no major search engines. Fourteen years later the module is a museum piece with downside.

SEO Panel pricing: free software, real costs

SEO Panel's own site says “100% Free Forever, no subscriptions, no hidden fees,” and for the software itself that is true. The bill arrives from three other directions.

• The server. A small VPS that can run PHP, MySQL and cron costs roughly $5 to $15 a month at mainstream providers. At $8/month that is $96 a year.
• The SERP data. Direct crawling of search results gets rate-limited and blocked. Your options are your own proxies, a DataForSEO account, or SEO Panel's own API tiers below.
• Your time. Installation, the cron setup, version upgrades, and triaging blocked requests. This is the cost people underestimate and the one nobody invoices you for.

The API plans (verified August 2026)

Version 6.0.0 introduced the SEO Panel Cloud API, which supplies live rankings, keyword insights and backlink data to your installation. A complimentary tier is available when you register an installation from the admin panel. The paid tiers, verified on SEO Panel's API plans page in August 2026:

Annual billing carries a stated discount that rises with the tier, from 10% on Starter to 25% on Enterprise. SEO Panel also markets a cloud-hosted option and sells proxies, neither of which publishes a price on its own site, so treat those as quote-only.

The 1-year and 3-year math

Two honest scenarios. The bare-bones column assumes you crawl SERPs directly and accept the blocking; the realistic column assumes you buy the Starter API tier annually.

• Realistic: $96 of server plus $107.89 of Starter API. $203.89 in year one, $611.67 over three years.

The comparison is not really one-time versus recurring here, because SEO Panel's recurring cost is infrastructure rather than licence. It is a question of what you want to be responsible for.

Is SEO Panel still maintained?

Yes, and the dates matter more than the answer. I checked the tagged releases on the project's GitHub releases page in August 2026 rather than trusting the marketing copy.

• The active stretch: six releases between June 2020 and August 2021, ending with 4.10.0 on August 31, 2021.
• The gap: nothing tagged until 4.11.0 on September 5, 2024. Three years and five days of silence.
• The revival: 5.0.0 on October 28, 2025 (Bootstrap rebuild, DataForSEO, Moz API v3), 5.1.0 on January 23, 2026 (AI robot detection, sitemap import, 45 languages), and 6.0.0 on March 26, 2026 (the API, the three-tier SERP engine, a redesigned dashboard).
• The ongoing signal: plugin and theme releases through April, May and June 2026, which is a better maintenance indicator than a single flagship version.

Performance in practice

Reading the release notes and the documentation, the pattern is consistent: SEO Panel's performance ceiling is set by your server and your SERP data source, not by the code.

• Rank checks are batched, not instant. Reports generate on the cron schedule you set. If you want a position right now, this is the wrong tool.
• Direct crawling degrades. Search engines rate-limit automated result scraping, which is precisely why the proxy manager and the fallback SERP engine exist.
• Scale is your problem to solve. Tracking 40 sites means 40 sites' worth of cron work on hardware you chose. There is no vendor quietly absorbing that load.
• Audit output is descriptive. You get a list of what is wrong. You do not get an argument about which item moves rankings.

The last point is the structural one. SEO Panel reports on your sites without ever joining what it finds to what is actually happening in search, so a broken title tag on a page nobody sees ranks the same as one on your best-converting page.

User experience and interface

Version 5.0.0 rebuilt the interface on Bootstrap and 6.0.0 redesigned the dashboard around a unified view of rankings, backlinks, audits, social metrics, reviews and analytics. That is a real improvement over the pre-2025 interface, which looked its age.

The learning curve, though, is front-loaded into the install rather than the UI.

• Before you see anything: a web server, PHP with cURL, MySQL, a database and user with privileges, and file upload or a one-click installer.
• Then the cron step: activate the tools you want in SEO Tools Manager, collect the cron command from Reports Manager, and schedule it. Skip this and the panel stays empty.
• Then the credentials: Moz API keys, Google Analytics and Search Console connections, and either proxies or an API plan.
• After that: the daily experience is a straightforward multi-site dashboard, and the roles system means staff can be given scoped access.

If you have ever installed WordPress by hand, none of this will frighten you. If you have not, budget an afternoon and a search engine.

SEO Panel pros and cons

Who SEO Panel is best for

The fit test is not really about SEO. It is about whether running a small server is a chore you accept or a chore you avoid.

• Best for technically comfortable consultants: you already run a VPS, you track positions for a handful of clients, and you would rather spend $96 a year than $1,548.
• Best for small agencies with many low-value sites: per-site SaaS pricing punishes a portfolio of 40 small clients. A self-hosted panel does not care how many sites you add.
• Best for privacy-sensitive or regulated work: client data never leaves your infrastructure, which is occasionally a contractual requirement rather than a preference.
• Best for tinkerers: GPL v2 plus a plugin system means you can modify it, and the plugin releases show the extension points are live.

Not ideal for four groups, and it is worth being blunt about them.

• Not for anyone who wants to start today: a hosted tool is running in five minutes; this one needs a server first.
• Not for technical audit work: the auditor checks the surface. Use a dedicated crawler such as Screaming Frog for depth.
• Not for keyword or competitor research: there is no database underneath, so you are bringing your own data anyway.
• Not for client-facing reporting at scale: reports exist, but nothing here matches a purpose-built white-label reporting workflow.

What reviewers say

SEO Panel's third-party footprint is small and heavily skewed toward its first five years, which is worth knowing before you read the average. Ratings verified August 2026:

• SourceForge: 4.5/5 from 15 reviews. Fourteen of the fifteen are five stars, and most were posted between 2010 and 2015. Treat that number as a decade-old signal.
• G2: 4.5/5 from 1 review. A single review is a data point, not a rating.
• The one recent review is the useful one. A SourceForge reviewer posting in April 2025 reported that the keyword rankings feature had stopped working three months earlier and that the project appeared abandoned. That timing sits inside the release gap and matches what the repository shows.
• Download activity is modest: SourceForge listed 68 downloads in the week I checked, which fits a niche self-hosted tool rather than a mass-market product.

I am not quoting a wall of five-star praise from 2013 as evidence about a 2026 product. The fair read is that SEO Panel has a small, long-standing user base and very little current public feedback.

SEO Panel alternatives

Four alternatives worth a look, depending on which part of SEO Panel you are actually replacing.
